Dark Hand & Lamplight
Presented by Family Books
Toronto-based visual artist Shary Boyle aka Dark Hand and musician
Doug Paisley aka Lamplight first came together as an opening act for
Will Oldham’s 2006 tour of California (under his Bonnie “Prince”
Billie moniker.) For the project, Lamplight wrote a collection of new songs,
which Dark Hand used as the basis for a new series of artwork.
Then, Dark Hand created artwork that Lamplight next used as the basis
for new instrumental compositions and improvisations. In a live setting,
the duo’s collaborative performance features Lamplight singing
and playing guitar while Dark Hand creates live drawings and animates
pre-drawn images on an overhead projector. Choreographed to the lyrics
and music, Dark Hand projects her artwork onto a screen, the wall,
Lamplight, and other available surfaces. For the first time since
their original tour, the duo return to California to give a rare performance
including their original favorites and new, never-performed material.

Tickets - $10

“FIRST SIGHT SCENE” AT THE LOS ANGELES FILMFORUM
NEW EXPERIMENTAL WORKS BY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FILMMAKERS

January 5, 2008 –– Los Angeles, CA – Showcasing the work of Southern California experimental filmmakers, the Los Angeles Filmforum, the city’s longest running experimental screening series, presents First Sight Scene, a program of new experimental shorts by local filmmakers, on January 27 at the Spielberg Theatre at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood.

First Sight Scene has been a yearly event for the exhibition of new works by Southern California experimental filmmakers since it was established by previous Filmforum Director Jon Stout in 1992. This year’s program presents the work of Madison Brookshire, John Cannizzaro, Erik Deutschman, Gwenaelle Gobe, Thomas Helman, Christina McPhee, and Dena DeCola and Karin E. Wandner, and is curated by Jaimie Baron and Victoria Meng, who are both graduate film scholars studying at UCLA and volunteers at the Los Angeles Filmforum.

This year’s First Sight Scene includes Madison Brookshire’s landscape meditation entitled Opening, shot on 16mm film and accompanied by a minimalist soundtrack performed by live musicians; John Cannizzaro’s Super8 poem Fountain of Youth, which explores feelings of nostalgia for childhood and a disappearing medium of remembrance; Erik Deutschman’s comic experiment with optical illusion, entitled Stare Gently; Gwenaëlle Gobé’s animated short, The Old Noise, in which the filmmaker uses silhouette cut-outs to tell the story of a girl with two heads; Thomas Helman’s nightmarish digital animation df/dx; Christina McPhee’s video Carrizoprime, which traces seismic distortion along the San Andreas Fault; and Five More Minutes, Dena DeCola and Karin E. Wander’s moving blend of documentary and narrative about a mother and daughter.

Screening time: approximately 75 minutes
